A GAELIC GALA ON THE PRAIRIE
Champaign Country Club
Friday, March 7, 2008
6:30-10:30 p.m.

The Prairie Ensemble will host “A Gaelic Gala on the Prairie” on Friday, March 7, 2008, from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Champaign Country Club, 1211 S. Prospect Ave., in Champaign. The event will offer attendees lively Irish music and dancing, mingling and hors d’oeuvres, plus the opportunity to purchase vacations, VIP treatment and one-of-a-kind merchandise from area merchants.

Entertainment will be provided by the Champaign-Urbana Ceili Union, which boasts members from throughout the Midwest, including Jake Schumacher, program director for WILL-FM 90.9 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The group will perform traditional Irish dance music - including jigs, reels and hornpipes - with the aid of authentic Irish instruments such as the wooden flute, fiddle, goatskin drum, accordion and piano.

As part of the performance, gala attendees will be encouraged to learn a traditional Irish ceili (pronounced “kay-lee”) dance, a group activity similar to line dancing composed of simple, easy-to-follow steps.

Additional entertainment will be provided by Prairie Ensemble harpist Charles Lynch, who will play background music at the start of the evening, and students from the Champaign Park District’s Dance Arts Irish dance classes for children.
