“Kettledrum Mass”

Haydn’s Mass in Time of War, or “Kettledrum
Mass” (Paukenmesse), is a work that is almost unrelentingly upbeat, in spite of its title, and is
also one of the best-known of Haydn's final six

masses. We feature four stellar soloists plus the
excellent Chorus of the Baroque Artists of Champaign-Urbana (BACH) in their
third collaboration with us. Françaix’s symphony will be a pleasant discovery
for all, and it happens to have been dedicated to the memory of Haydn.
We open the program, on Britten’s birthday, with Pärt’s moving, mystical
elegy for strings and a single bell.
