W. A. Mozart: Serenade for Winds in C Minor, K. 388
Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 4 (arranged for small
chamber orchestra by Erwin Stein)

Since Bach's time and before, composers have arranged
and rearranged their own and others' music to suit
various purposes—often to bring famous works to a
wider audience. Mozart and Mahler were among those
inveterate tinkerers. At this concert we feature Erwin Stein's
remarkable reduction of the most light-hearted and child-like
of Mahler's symphonies from its massive orchestral original
to an ensemble of just thirteen players and soprano.
The most serious of Mozart's many serenades serves
as prelude.
